Robotics season planning with mandates

Robotics seasons are intense and finite. The mistake is managing them like a single project backlog. What actually needs protection are a few sustained outcomes that span kickoff through competition — and survive mentor turnover mid-season.

Name the season mandates early

  • Every student has a meaningful technical role by week four
  • Robot is competition-ready two weeks before events
  • Safety and pit protocols are practiced, not assumed
  • Parent and sponsor communication stays current

Commitments beat endless task boards

"Design drivetrain" is a commitment with an owner. Under it sit tasks that change daily. When the drivetrain lead leaves, the commitment history — decisions, blockers, photos — is what the next mentor needs, not a stale checklist.

Revisit on the season clock

Align mandate revisits to season milestones: kickoff, first scrimmage, bag-and-tag, championship. Computed health tells you which outcomes are drifting before a Friday panic.

End-of-season handoff seed

Before championship week, name next-season owners and retire or renew each mandate. That habit is what keeps institutional knowledge from leaving with graduating seniors and rotating mentors.
